Cooper-Hewitt’s groundbreaking 2007 book Design for the Other 90% explored design that focused on solutions that address the 90% of the world’s population not traditionally served by the professional design community. Design with the Other 90%: CITIES, the second book in an ongoing series, examines the complex issues arising from unprecedented urban growth, primarily in the informal settlements of emerging and developing economies. Through a dozen essays and interviews, sixty profiles of solutions, and more than 250 photographs, Design with the Other 90%: CITIES examines the extraordinary efforts in urban planning, sustainable design, affordable housing, entrepreneurship, nonformal education, communication, food security, water and sanitation, and public health happening in these communities to ensure their residents a brighter future.
